Late P.K. Sherpa

PK's life had been an example for all of us. Without benefit of formal schooling, he had grown from cook boy to business and community leader, with friends and admirers all over the world. We are proud of his successful career and of the help he had given his own community with the Tengboche reconstruction, hydro system in Namche and religious projects all over the Khumbu. His compassion and caring have made him a symbol of the best of Buddhist and Sherpa culture. He continued to play an important role working with his friends in the United States and elsewhere in building a better life for all Sherpas.

He was awarded Man of the Year by American Himalayan Foundation (AHF). The American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the people and ecology of the Himalaya.

Man of the year award 1991, awarded to P.K. Sherpa Pasang Kami (P.K.) Sherpa was born in Khumbu to a relatively poor Namche family. As a teenager he started carrying loads for mountaineers in Khumbu, become cook’s helper, and was promoted to cook, then to guide and sirdar for Mountain Travel, where he worked for 12 years. He led several expeditions to Everest, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna, plus trekking groups to upper Mustang. In early 1980 he opened the Khumbu Hotel in Namche, which was registered as a lodge in 1985. P.K. hosted the former American president and his wife. Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter, in 1985 and started a trekking service called Nepal Himal Treks. In 1991 he was awarded “Man of the year” by the American Himalayan Foundation. While he never completed formal education himself, he was able to educate his son and daughters in Kathmandu and abroad.
